Description

A bold scarlet-red midseason standby glad, with a speckled golden-yellow throat. Although it was originated by Bates, Fireball II was named — sort of — by one of the Cates kids! Paul Cates had a long friendship with Alex Summerville, who introduced Fireball II in his catalog in 1994 — a friendship strengthened by mutual commiseration over decades of backbreaking work in their respective glad fields. When Paul brought home a spike of this glad among an armload of seedlings after a visit to Summerville’s farm in New Jersey in the early 90s, one of Paul’s kids immediately declared it to look like a blazing fireball. And, well, there was already a Fireball that had been introduced, so Fireball II was born.
